The Road Not Taken

George Bailey never got to live the life he wanted and wonders what would have happened if he had made different choices as a younger man. In This Wonderful Life -- opening December 3rd on the Mainstage -- George Bailey gets to travel the road not taken and see what his home town of Bedford Falls would be like if he had never been born.

What about you? Do you have a road not taken? At some point in life, did you flirt with leaving home for something new, something beyond the horizon, but then you never ended up going down that road? How would your life be different had you taken that path? Like George, how did things turn out by not taking it?

We want to hear from YOU: Please share your story by clicking on the Comments link below. Selected entries will be posted in the Perseverance Theatre lobby throughout the run of This Wonderful Life.

  1. I'm all atwitter. My excitement rears its head like some draconian monstrosity awakened by a team of unsuspecting miners.

  2. When I was in my mid-twenties, I decided to apply to the PhD program in the History of Consciousness at UC Santa Cruz. I'd been a high school history teacher for six years and, because I enjoyed reading about French intellectuals in my spare time, thought this would be a great program for me. I was rejected. And then again, two years later. And yet again, two years after that. But with that final rejection, I was accepted at UC Davis, where I completed my doctorate in history — a prelude to eventually getting hired at UAS. From time to time I've wondered, what if I had gotten accepted into that History of Consciousness program? Where would I be today, and what on earth would I be doing? I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have ended up in Juneau, at UAS, playing cello the Juneau Symphony, or on the board of Perseverance Theatre. In all, my life here is pretty much wonderful. --Robin Walz
